Manchester City defeated Fulham 4-0 in their 36th match of the Premier League (PL) at the Craven Cottage stadium on Saturday and now have one hand on the league title.
A brace from Josko Gvardiol and goals by Phil Foden and Julian Alvarez cruised Pep Guardiola’s side to a crucial win as they went above Arsenal in the PL points table.
City are defending their Premier League title for the fourth successive year and are on course to become the first team to do so as the Cityzens continue the battle with the Gunners.
With the win over Fulham, City went two points clear on the top over Arsenal, who will face Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday.
With 85 points from 36 matches, Guardiola’s men stay on top of the table, two more than Arteta’s troops who have 83 points from as many matches.
No team in the history of the Premier League has won the league title four times in a row. In the past, Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United won three consecutive league titles from 2006 to 2008 but that feat has already been matched by Man City.
While Man City is fighting to win their fourth consecutive league trophy, the Gunners are aiming for their first league title since 2004 when they were crowned the champions without losing a single match all season under the guidance of Arsene Wenger.
Mikel Arteta came close to winning the league title last season when the Gunners stayed on top of the table for the majority of the season but a slip in form in April 2023 saw them dropping eight points within 30 days.
Guardiola didn't waste the opportunity to take advantage of Arsenal's bad form and soon guided his side to their third successive league title.
